When it comes to lifting, the average person does not know what they are doing. They go in the gym and do what they assume is best. It's not their fault, they train with good intentions and to the best of their knowledge. The only problem is it will take them much longer to ultimately achieve their desired results.
There is a science to lifting and knowing what to do, when to do it and how many repetitions is the KEY.
Many people believe that you build muscle when you lift weights, but this is not true. Lifting weights basically tears the muscle fibers on the muscle, which breaks the muscle down. We actually GROW by healing those muscle fibers we broke down in the first place. What happens is when the muscle heals; more muscle fibers get added to the muscle and in return makes the muscle bigger and leaner. So then, you lift weights, repeating the process and over time, you get bigger, harder, leaner, and stronger. The problem is people don't allow enough recovery time for the muscle to heal or do not train the muscle enough.
Training the same muscles too soon tears down the muscles down even more, which could lead to an injury or take a long time for muscle growth. Not training the muscle enough will just take longer to acquire results you seek.
What about women? Most women don't want to get big and bulky. Won't they do so if they lift weights?
Women have a MUCH harder time getting big and bulky because they produce 6 times LESS testosterone than men do. That is one of the reasons why it takes them much longer to get big and bulky. I'm not saying they can't get big, but they have a harder time than men do. Mostly, women build long lean muscle that increases their metabolism and helps get rid of unwanted body fat around their mid section. If a woman wants to get bigger, they have to train specifically to get bigger.
~Quick Results?~
If you really want quick results, you need to emphasis diet. This is because you need to aid the muscle with vitamins, minerals, amino acids (protein), sleep, and much more to target your goal. That way, the muscle can repair, adding more muscle quicker. If you learn to heal the muscle, it will grow faster because you helped repair it.
When training, train the whole body not just your upper body. The quadriceps is the biggest muscle on the body. Remember, the more muscle you have, the more your metabolism will increase, helping you shed body fat from all over your body. It will make your upper body more toned and your abdominal region defined in less time than you ever imagined! So just think how much faster you'd build muscle if you trained the whole body instead of just parts.
Eating
When you start eating healthier (more foods with a lower glycemic index), you will reduce your body fat making your muscles become more visible. Plus, more muscle = faster metabolism = more calories burning when doing nothing.
How many exercises, sets, and reps I should use?
